Periodically, devastating strains of the influenza virus spread through the world's population. The well known Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918-1919 was followed by the Asian Flu of 1957 and the Hong Kong Flu of 1968. Currently, health officials are alarmed by the spread of a virus known as H5N1. The virus is carried by birds, both domestic and wild. It appears that in Asia, humans have become infected with H5N1 by exposure to sick or dead poultry. So far, the virus does not seem capable of traveling from human to human with ease.
Take Precautions!
The most direct way to avoid being infected with a deadly virus, should an outbreak occur, is to limit contact with other people. Send only one family member out to gather food and supplies. This person should wear protective clothing such as a mask and exam gloves. Clothes should be changed away from the living area.

In conclusion:
The influenza pandemic of 1918-19 was so horrific that when it was over, the survivors spoke very little of their experiences. They were unaware that the illness was caused by a virus, an entity so small, no microscope of their time could detect it. Today we can avoid being caught off guard.
